When it comes to planning an important event these days - you might want to try to cut costs as much as possible without sacrificing quality, right? For instance, the cost for something like live event photography could cost anywhere from $500 - $1,500 or more. You might try to cut costs here and end up with a $200 or $300 "photographer". But, odds are you'll be quite disappointed after everything is said and done.

According to a recent survey, 21% of brides polled, for instance, said they wish they would have spent more on a wedding photographer. They had either regretted the photographer they chose or they were disappointed in the photos received.

A cheap photographer is not good - a good photographer is not cheap.

Not all cheap photographers are bad. Most who are only charging a small fee have likely just started and are doing everything they can to build their portfolio. However, be very careful and be diligent in your search for a professional.

I'm in several online photography groups and I've come across some very interesting and frightening posts. I've seen everything from "Help, I just booked my first wedding, it's in one week. What are the best settings for shooting inside a church with my new camera?" to "What do I do? I shot an entire event yesterday and I can't retrieve the photos because my memory card is corrupt. What do I tell my client?".

The truth is that even with today's most amazing technology, there is no "magic formula" one can offer somebody for taking photos inside a dark church - or anywhere else for that matter. A photographer must know his or her camera inside out and how he or she works the settings that give that look and the feel that make us all say "Wow! that's an awesome photo!". And - it's more likely that a professional photographer will show up to any gig with back-up gear.

Part of the recipe to those awesome photos I just referred to, is composition - knowing how to position what is seen through the viewfinder to tell the client's story. Then there's posing. A professional photographer knows how to talk to his or her subjects in order to direct them where he wants them and how he wants them. The right placement of a hand or the slightest tilt of the head can make all the difference between just an ordinary snapshot and a great photo. A solid understanding of lighting and color is an absolute must, as well. All these things take knowledge and skill, hours and hours of practice and experience. And let's not forget the editing skills that come afterward. Most photos today go through some sort of editing process before they are turned over to a client.

We've had people ask, "Is it really possible for a bad and inexperienced photographer to have great looking photos in their portfolio? How do I know who to trust?" I tell them this: "It's quite simple. Always ask for references - AND call those references". I promise you, a good and well experienced, professional photographer will have a list of clients he or she is just dying to offer you. They know this is the proof in the pudding that you, the client is looking for".
